Post subject:  Thoughts on Power

Power was recently added as a replacement to MC prize payouts. Instead of 75 gold, 7 Power gets awarded.

Here are my initial reactions.

There is an implied ratio of 10 gold = 1 power (due to the MC payout and entry fee conversions), but Power will probably end up being worth less than that for a couple of reasons:

1) Power needs to be spent in large chunks and probably infrequently. The least expensive entry fee is 22 Power (or placing first in 6 MCs).

2) Power can only be spent in entry fees. No more buying a common with your MC gold winnings.

3) If demand for Power is low, and given the limited use for power, there will be more sellers than buyers. This will further depress its value.

4) The market takes a cut when selling / buying power. A buyer would only be willing to pay at most 10 gold for a power card. That nets the seller 9 gold. That means the current payout for MCs is at best 36/18/9 gold. I suspect Power's value is really closer to 8 gold, which would mean MC payouts have dropped from 45/19/11 gold to 32/16/8 gold.

5) Most Power will be unused. The best way to maximize Power's value probably is to hoard Power and use them for fees only.

I'm sure there are some positives. The artwork is cute. There's a 2% discount for battle draft entry fees if you actually see full value for power. Less gold into the market ought to bring more real currency into TFW. I'd prefer if MC payouts were cut to less gold rather than being paid out in Power.

Thoughts?

Well people can also buy power if they have some power already to get enough for an entry fee. Also we will be adding more things you can do with it as time goes on.

I think power is a great idea to encurage players to play tournament insted of spending all their gold in market.

It's a great idea. :D

For Power become of any use, anyone have to win 13 Minor Clashes (I am not going to speak about Battle Draft - there is 50% chance of loosing everything, so not many players will go in) - this is really huge number, looking around and seeing kind of players entering MCs nowadays.
I even have already heard "Why would I have to enter MC? Even if I win.. I get nothing useful out of it, not even mentioning 2nd and 3rd place.." and that's true..
Aye, it was like 9-12 MC won to enter domain even before, but there was use even for reward from a single MC won..

Unless some another handy option what to do with Power will be added I vote for old style of payouts.. :S

Well just sell your power if you don't want to save up for keep cards.

power is a completely pointless form of currency for a game that already had a currency system. i have no clue why it was created. what was the benefit of creating this instead of using gold? i don't understand. making it even harder for new players? the game doesn't have enough players to be chasing them away by making it impossible for them to do anything.

I think power should be able to buy more things like packs, or entering brass league, zwar gokken, or shark tank. Right now it takes so long for power to do anything.

Power does not affect new people. Neebies have no chance at MC then no chance to win power. They get their gold From Ladder and the can buy at market with that. Power is affecting more experienced players and some times lucky ones. Apparently it is there to encourage people to join the leagues instead of wasting everything in market. And it is only for those leagues that let you win cards. I think it’s a great idea because it makes the game more playable. Before Power if I bought 500 gold expending my bucks in that I would had to wait like 2 weeks to find enough people for a keep cards. I think power can begging to change that.

I disagree. I found this game and started playing in March. The ladder also started towards the end of March. I earned hundreds of gold through minor clash victories, in the neighborhood of 6-8 times the amount I won in the ladder. I won enough to buy enough commons and packs to piece together an okay deck. With that okay deck in place, I was able to be much more competitive both in minor clashes (no longer being forced to use the default decks), and in ladder matches.

That would be much, much harder with the current power setup. Getting extremely lucky in a MC with a default deck, and picking up 11 gold (possibly 5 commons) is a huge difference starting out and working towards a complete deck. Now someone lucking into 3rd will pick up 1 power that can be flipped immediately in the market at a current price netting 7 gold (or 3 commons). That's a huge hit in how fast a new player can improve their deck. It's hardly a waste if the newbie gets commons they need, established users get rid of their extra commons, and the market takes its cut and gold out of the system.

I'd also argue that the ladder is even harder for newbies to win at nowadays. I haven't checked recently, but I suspect the vast majority of the ladder leaderboards are still duplicate accounts made with the sole purpose of ladder climbing. That climbing is of course at the expense of newbies.

It'd be interesting to see whether the amount of market transactions has changed any with this change to power. I suspect has decreased, as people tend to use lobbies to sell their power instead of the market. It have had the effect of leaving more gold in the game (due to less market drain) instead of decreasing it.
