Keep the game clock running, just stop turn time. If a player lags and another player get's to exploit that advantage it becomes a biased game.

Could you explain this a bit more? What is game clock? And what about lag - it is not 2 minutes long, right? 10 seconds maximum I guess, well, that mean that you have 10 less seconds to think, but that's still not so big problem.

I think AFK is a better word than lag. I guess I'm suggesting a revamp to the AFK system.

What I mean is if a computer freezes up or an internet connection screws up there is a good chance you will miss your turn. This causes a biased game and can sacrifice field position.

My suggestion is

A)Stop the turn timer (stop the match) as soon as a player is logged out of the lobby (afk)
B)Start the AFK timer when ^^^above^^^ occurs.
C)Make the 5 minute AFK timer count total afk time. No reseting the timer.

So you can't abuse going afk. All this would do is give the benefit of making it safer if a player accidently gets disconnected for any reason.

My computer had been freezing up. I fixed it but I'm sure other players will accidently be disconnected in the future so it's still a good suggestion.

Er, you either don't know how AFK and disconnect timers work, or I don't understand what are you talking about.

Whenever you logged out of the lobby (including manually closed game, crashed computer, power off, etc.) you are considered disconnected. When this happens 5 minutes timer starts and game stopped. When you log in you still have same turn and same amount of time you had before (might be 10-20 seconds less due to lag on your side).
So the only difference between your suggestion and current system is that you can abuse it.

Just to give full answer I'll also describe how AFK timer work. Whenever you do an action your AFK timer resets. AFK timer work when it is your turn. When it reach 3 minutes players see message about AFK player. When it reach 5 minutes you loose.

My suggestion is non abuseable so you must be misunderstanding.

It seems your describing the afk timer is already how I suggest it but I've never seen a match stop because someone was afk. Maybe I'm wrong. I'd be willing to test it if we are both on at the same time.

I mean current system can be abused.

What about timers - do not confuse AFK and disconnected timer. Only disconnected timer stop game, but actually you can't see that immediately, since timer goes to 0 in client and stops there, but actually on server side it stops earlier, right when player is disconnected. That's a bit confusing, and sometimes you can see how total timer goes up.

Oh, I hadn't even though of there being 2 timers. That was a good idea.

Are you sure the disconnected timer is firing off? I built the computer I'm using now and I was disconnected (by computer freezing) quite a few times well working all the bugs out of it. I've never noticed the luxury of the disconnected timer.
