if an aloft creature gets undimed for a certain reason after playing and getting dimmed and then smoke and soot is cast the aloft creature is not affected by it - happened to me both with an erg geyser and with an arbixian sparker

My guess is that aloft creatures lose aloft until the end of the round if they attack something.

than it should work both ways - if an aloft creature lost its aloft when its undimmed it shouldnt be able to fly again and attack something else also smoke and soot grounds and dims so that creature should be dimmed back
