Here's what's displayed in the console that pops up (Windows 7, compatibility mode for XP, SP2 (it was what the system recommended), and full admin rights (just to see if that was the issue):

Quote:
Starting...
Verifying VC redist
Downloading VCRedist...
Error downloading http://www.thefarwilds.com/hinstaller/v ... _x86.exe... continuing...
Error downloading updates... continuing...
(<type 'exceptions.AttributeError'>, AttributeError("'NoneType' object has no attribute 'read'",), <traceback object at 0x024F3C88>)

Incidentally, this also happens without compatibility mode on.

I think it may be my firewall that's catching it -- but I'm not sure. I've given the farwildslauncher.exe permissions, but if that calls another executable, that may be my problem. I also saw where there was some developer kit or something of the like that needs to be installed in order for the program to run, but I've not been able to locate where the system requirements are on this website. I ignored it at the time because I was fairly sure I had it installed, but this might not be the case.

I also had an issue with the program requiring d3d9_37.dll if I were to attempt to run farwilds.exe, by-passing the launcher, but it came up a treat after I just downloaded that dll and put it in the helpers folder...but I then got the same issues that have been reported and discussed about logging in (I just include that bit for full disclosure, I'm going to go back through the older threads to see if I can find a workable solution for me).

Any ideas/suggestions? I'd rather be able to get the updates without having to reinstall. (Well, other than play the browser version -- I'm on satellite internet and it doesn't seem to want to play too well.)

Thanks.

Looks like that file was removed / not accessible any more on server.

You can download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package manually.

Cool beans -- thanks.

Update on the launcher: I'm still getting the same error message as prior. .

I checked the log after trying the launcher and it just said:
Quote:
[ Fri Apr 08 18:56:35 2011 ]: handleConnect: 10060) A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond

Now, being on a sat. connection, I have a very high latency rate (typically around 3/4ths of a second to a second). I'm wondering if maybe that is causing a timeout.

Just an update on the login issue:
I imagine that this is happening because the program is not wanting to update to the latest version (if a version has come out in the last week or so -- I forget exactly when I downloaded it). Anyway, I tried it again a few moments ago, received the same error as before, and then checked the log again. This time, there's a running ton of stuff in there that it is probably better if I don't bother posting here (will email if such is desired). I'm not sure what it's worth but I noticed Jed asking what the tooltip was when you hovered over the login button, and like the other guy, it says for me: "Process Ver 3569780186"

Oh, and to be clear, I can play the online version -- it's just annoying as all get out because of that latency rate.
