I had a game where someone played possession on my ghost ship and then used its ability. It returned to his hand. Is it supposed to work like this? I really don't like this interaction if this is how it works.

Most card returners go to the controller's hand (and possession makes you the controller). This has other interesting effects; if someone ascents a creature you have charmed, it goes back to your hand, not theirs. If you ascent an uncontrolled creature, it disappears.

The only card that works with caster and not with controller is Negate and is says "Caster of Entity...".
And with Ghost Ship - "return to your hand": you used ability, you got card into hand.
