OK, maybe this isn't a bug, but it's very odd.

Rufio and I were in the finals of a Borderlands KC. 2nd round I played defection on him. A Nightfall Bounty Hunter popped up by my base.

I was like "shoot! what is he gonna do, go kill my other creature on the board"
Then I saw that he had a blue circle - controlled by me. And I was like, holy cow, I got a 4/6 huge dude for just 3 flux!

And when Rufio saw me control it, he was like "I'm screwed, that's not fair"
So I moved him around and killed a little CI creature, can't remember what (instead of attacking his Kodiak). And then *poof* he disappears. So now I was like "I'm screwed, that's not fair" - because I had just cast a construction site thinking my 4/6 huge dude would have no problem defending.

Fortunately for me, Rufio didn't realize it was gone. Of course, that wasn't really fair to Rufio, either.

So, is this a bug? Should defection even be allowed to grab uncontrolled creatures? (yay, I got a mastadon, or a tangler!)

I guess if it's not a bug, then anyone reading this will know how that card works now, at the very least, since it caused a lot of chaos in our game.

In the spirit of the card you can't "defect" if you weren't first a part of someone's organization. From a different perspective though, I suppose you could consider the creature to be defecting from a "neutral" party (considering uncontrolled creatures as being sort of under the control by an unknown third party).

If you take the third party stance, and get a bounty hunter, then it does 'sort of' make sense that it would disappear after it claims a bounty...

Sounds like a bug, once I played defection and got a veldan unicorn that was uncontrolled, so the card should be consistent with uncontrolled creatures or apply effects that happen when you play the card.

I think you should just get to name the card and it should stay uncontrolled.

I agree with rufio.

Because the card still charges if it takes a card or not. So being able to name the card would make it a more usefull constructed card.

bump. watched a domain game where defection yielded a dimwitted manticore -- uncontrolled. this is inconsistent with the wording on defection which leaves no uncertainty about the creature being controlled by the caster of defection.

my suggestion would be to change the wording to not allow targeting uncontrolled creatures (see Sunyaku's rationale). with regard to balancing, there is already a lot of disincentive to spend more than two flux on defection -- manticore shouldn't add to that. (in fairness, I think defection would still be playable even if the functionality remained the same and the wording was corrected.)
