Although there is a wealth of very useful information on it, the Wiki is in many instances outdated, incomplete and confusing. Keyser has so far done at least something to rectify this by adding new and updated stuff on a continuous basis. I think, however, it is time to make something more substantial about this. The main motivation for a change (which is probably the main motivation behind most of my posts) is to make TFW more friendly to new players.

I suggest that the Wiki should have a structure of the following kind:

Wiki TFW – Main Page

1. The Far Wilds: Introduction
a. Type of Game
b. The Object of the Game
c. Free to Play

2. Getting Started
a. The Lobby Tab
b. The Army Tab
c. The Market Tab
d. The Tournament Tab
e. The Battle Tab
f. The Scenario Tab

3. Card Types
a. Creatures
b. Spells
c. Enchantments
d. Buildings

4. Battling
a. Battle Screen
b. Turn System
c. Control
d. Player Status
e. Commands

5. Cards
a. Factions
b. Rarity
c. The Seed Set
d. Borderlands

6. Tournaments and Leagues
a. Domain League
b. Brass
c. Shark Tank
d. Keep Cards
e. The Ladder

7. Buying Gold
a. Payments
b. Packs
c. Starter Packs

8. Guides

9. Glossary

10. FAQ

11. Other The Far Wilds Sources

----------------------

This is just the bare bones of a possible structure and many things should no doubt be added (for instance, Lore should probably have a section). Quite a lot of the existing wiki can probably just be copied/pasted with some minor editorial changes, so it is not like writing all of it completely anew. (Most pictures need to be replaced though.)

[EDIT: There is a lot of useful and (mainly) updated information in the How To Play and Player Guide on the main TFW page. Much of this can obviously go directly into the Wiki.]

What do you guys think about all this? Perhaps more importantly, is anyone willing to help out with this? It is definitely going to take some time to get the wiki into proper shape, but if lots of people help out, I am sure we can do it :)

I've worked on the wiki before as well. A while ago I added a bunch of cards for the seed set and did a few borderlands cards as well as fixing things that were out of date. If someone finds something that needs to be fixed I can probably do it.

I most certainly want to help. Let's coordinate. We need players to write and organize. It's probably easiest if one or two are in charge of organizing (let's nominate all three people that have posted so far. heh)....

But as far as writing goes, we don't want to duplicate efforts. It would suck if one person wrote a page and finished it just in time to see another player already wrote the same page. The wiki is great for editing and modifying, so if we get one person to write the base page, others can edit easily.

When you go to create a new topic, please post here that you are writing that topic AND go ahead and save the basic page in the wiki so that it shows up as someone writing it.. even if the basic page simply says "I'm writing more. Coming soon."

I'm at a big dance competition and peformance this weekend, but I'll try to get an intro page (that has links to the existing/nonexisting bits) like Voices put in the first post. I'm not sure if I can edit the home page of the wiki. If I can't do that, I'll make it as new page "INTRO" and then ask Jed to copy those contents to the home page for the wiki.

Sorry aa, didn't mean not to give you any credits for your work. And great that you are willing to help!

Keyser, I'm not entirely sure whether what you mean with 'base page' is the the kind of structure i suggested above, but if it is, would you mind creating it? I have only experience of editing/commenting in various wikis. I have no eperience from making new pages from the start.
If there is a need for a lead coordinator, would you be up for it?

Altren indicated yesterday in chat that he will begin working on rules and defintions in order to make these more clear and updated. As far as I can tell, he will start from the entries in the wiki Glossary, so that should help the overall effort of making the wiki look better.

Would be great if other Wilders would be helping out too! :)

Cheers

I've made a copy of the "original" main page here --> http://thefarwilds.com/wiki/index.php/OldMainPage

If you want to edit the "new" main page, go here --> http://thefarwilds.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Voices, take a look at the basic structure already on that main page. Do we want to completely redo it to match what you put in your first post, or do we want to keep the basics shown there and modify it? There's a lot of information and links already on there. Let me know what you think.

Ideally, I'd say, it should be redone to match something akin to my suggestion. I know that will not be an easy thing to do and it will probably involve loads of copying/pasting and stuff, but i think that in the end it will be worth it. (Also, all pictures need to be replaced anyway.)

But this is just my point of view. It would be nice to have input from other people before we do any major changes. Maybe even jed has something to say :)

I believe the lack of input is a combined result of people being too lazy, too busy, or too focused on the game. Also newbies seem to care about the wiki as much as they care about the forums.

My Suggestions are:
1) Try to draw more attention to wiki as well as the forum. More people means more changes to the wiki, and therefore keeping it current.

2) The current Main Page should become something like a "General Description" page. Being a wiki, we need a more organized format. SmashWiki has an example of a good front page, and there are many others wikis (and wikipedia) we can use for reference as well.

I could be wrong but I would imagine that the wiki is dropped in on at least once by almost every player who develops any real interest in the game. Early on a player finds themselves wondering about all the cards they haven't seen yet and about particular uses of certain cards they may have that may not seem so obvious to them. Unfortunately, the wiki just sends them off site for a comprehensive listing of cards - which actually turns out to not be that comprehensive anyway. Also the organization of the wiki is such that it gives the new player the impression that it is of highly limited usefulness. Which is the real point of this post, to address the issue of organization.

For what it's worth Keyser, I think your proposed re-organization would be a major improvement for the most part and is really needed.

Regarding the card references though:
Is there a reason for the odd organization there. You have
3. Card Types
4. Battling
5. Cards
which seems awkward and counter intuitive to me.

I really think that one very important aspect of the wiki should be comprehensive reference materials for the cards. I think the whole approach to this aspect of the wiki should be re-thought. Aren't we re-inventing the wheel here?

Doesn't the game already make use of a database of cards with all the artwork and information regarding every single card already available. So doesn't all this info already exist in a readily accessible and highly organizable format.

Why not just pull the info for all cards directly from the source and even allow them to be sorted and filtered just the way they can be in-game, show the artwork, complete stats, etc. It could even be done just like the flash version of the game shows the army screens.

In the wiki version though, add the function of allowing users to comment and discuss each card, as well as a dedicated space to specifically outline useful strategies and combos relevant to each card. The strategies and combos section will be the "wiki" aspect and largely empty at first but this info can be added over time - and in the future the info may in some cases be able to be distilled from the comments/discussion sections of individual cards.

Then on the wiki homepage also add a scrollable box which lists a compiled comment history for all cards in one place with most recent comments first - that way people can see if someone has asked a question about a card without browsing the whole card library to find the comment on that one card. We could see recent discussion activity on different cards without having to browse each card to find new comments.

Have a separate space to list changes to the library itself (changes to the actual cards and strategies/combos sections, as opposed to casual discussion/comments).

This would be a very useful reference system for the complete library of cards, and it is just the sort of thing many first time visitors to the wiki would love to find.
